There are many folding boxes produced using corrugated fiberboard materials. Although corrugated fiberboard is not as thin but rigid as FBB, it is a good option to apply corrugated fiberboard too. Corrugated fiberboard is a paper-based multiple material consisting of fluted corrugated layers and flat linerboard layers, which is widely used during the manufacture of corrugated boxes, shipping containers and folding boxes. The corrugated medium and linerboard are made of containerboard, a paper-like material usually over 0.01 inches thick. Sometimes, paperboard and corrugated fiberboard are also called cardboard although cardboard may be any heavy paper-pulp based board.
As other paper and paperboard products corrugated board manufacturing process also begins with pulping, the separation of wood into individual fibers, as accomplished by mechanical methods or chemical treatment. The corrugated medium is often 0.026 pounds per square foot basis weight in USA, but in UK a 90 grams per square meter fluting paper is common. It is heated, moistened, and formed into a fluted pattern on geared wheels. This is joined to a flat linerboard with a starch based adhesive to form single face board. At the double-backer, a second flat linerboard is adhered to the other side of the fluted medium to form single wall corrugated board. Linerboards are recycled paper or kraft paperboard. The liner may be bleached white, mottled white, colored, or preprinted.
